Oldsmobile Progress

Today I made some good progress on the 1958 Oldsmobile Super 88. I installed the gas tank, finished plumbing the fuel system, installed the shocks and got the rear suspension corrected. Check it out!

The gas tank and sending unit needed a little help before installation. The hardware was a mix of two different types of 10-24  screws and two wood screws. I got some matching hardware together and cleaned the mounting holes with a tap.

Here's the gas tank ready for installation. I made up a new sending unit wire and added a devoted ground wire as well. I also replaced the 5/16 rubber fuel line and routed it correctly.

The rear ride height was a little high because...

The rear spring shackles were installed backwards.

I took it all apart and set it up right.

Here's where it sits now.

I spent some time trying to mount the rear shocks until I figured out the lower shock mounts ( and the spring plates) were installed backwards as well. See how they are facing the back of the car?

After taking it all apart, I was able to flip the lower spring plates and get the shocks installed correctly. See all the new powder coating and new hardware everywhere? I told you this car was done right!
