Mustang Progress

We were making some great progress on the 1966 Mustang Convertible and then got sidetracked the last couple of weeks over very small things. The brand new ignition switch we got was defective out of the box, for example. There were some other small issues as well, but they all took time to discover and then to correct. So I was very happy when we were able to fire the car for the first time last week, with the owner's whole family there in the shop to watch!

I fixed a small leak, bled the brakes and then actually drove the car around the parking lot as it sits. Now it's back to the body shop to finish the paint and to assemble the rest of the sheet metal. When it comes back to us we will have to install the exhaust, all the trim, the bumpers and lights, and glass. Then it's off to have the interior installed.

All the mechanical systems are brand new and fully functional.

The car has a few coats of base color only, no clear yet. The body shop is going to scuff the base coat lightly, assemble all the panels, shoot it with a few more coats of base color and then hit it with clear.

The owners have decided to turn the car into a GT clone. All trim holes have been filled and I will re-drill all new ones for the GT trim package. The exhaust tips will exit through the rear valence.
The car is better than new, everywhere.

The dash gauges were beautifully rebuilt by the owner. The Vintage Air unit is controlled by the factory heater controls. We also adapted the fan switch in the heater controls to serve as a manual switch for the electric engine fan.

The motor is a real date coded 1966 K code high performance 289.
