Making Parts

Last week I dug into the Srudebaker just a little. I cleaned out all the black widows and mouse droppings and dirt. There's some metal work I need to do on the body before primer, this includes rust repair in three common areas (bottoms of both fenders and one quarter panel) and smoothing the front bumper. I had a few hopurs to spare so I tackled the rust repair in the drivers side quarter. Here's how it went.

This was the rust out in the bottom of the quarter panel. There's two major spots of rust through.

I sanded the whole area, then I marked the cut line.

After the cut. The rusted out area inside will get replaced from the inside of the car, later on.

I cut a patch oversize and laid it on top. The quarter panel has a slight radius here so i had to get my patch to do the same thing.

After using some top secret old man tricks (and my knee) I came up with this. Fits nice.

I slid the fitted patch panel behind the quarter and marked it to cut.

Here's the lower rusted out section.

Using more super secret tricks I learned from very old men, I made this patch panel

Here it is clamped in place ready to fit.

I cut both patches so they fit nice and tight to their respective cut lines. Here's the upper patch panel held in place by magnets.

And here they both are, tacked in place and ready to finish weld.
