55 Pontiac Day One

Today I did the disassembly and took care of the brakes on the Pontiac. I took out the fuel tank, radiator and heater core. These were all sent to my local radiator shop to be boiled out, pressure tested and resealed. I also removed the cast iron hydro transmission, this thing weighs a ton! But they were the transmission to have in the early days of drag racing, modified hydro's is how B&M got their start.

After all that there was still some time left to tackle the brakes. I removed the master cylinder and rebuilt it in hose with a new kit and a quick honing, bead blast and paint. It's good as new. I also replaced all four wheel cylinders, and I will replace the three rubber brake hoses when they arrive from the parts house.

Tomorrow I'm digging into the motor...

Here's the Pontiac hydramatic trans. These things were tough as nails but a little strange by modern standards. They had two pans, no park, and reverse was all the way down on the shifter. See all those holes around the torque converter? Almost all of them are nutted and bolted to the flywheel. Let's hope this thing only has to go in once!

Here's the master cylinder, honed and blasted and painted and ready to go.
