Making Parts

On the Morris Minor, I had to make a head pipe for the exhaust. This is the pipe that connects to the. exhaust manifold and routes out of the engine bay to a point under the car where it connects to the muffler. Since I had nothing to start with and it had to make a pretty radical bend, I made the whole thing from scratch, flange and all. Here's show it happened.

Here's the flange laid out on 3/16 cold rolled steel and set up in the mill.

After a rough cut on the bandsaw, I finished the flange on the disc sander and the belt sander.

Here's a virgin 2" U bend in 16 gauge steel. I make a lot of parts with these things.

After some eyeball engineering I cut a chunk out of the U bend and positioned it in the flange.

Then some more adjustment and eyeballing, here it is bolted to the manifold in the car.

After a little more eyeballing and whatnot, another section of the U bend is cut and trimmed and positioned. It's important to fit the sections as tight as possible, it makes it a bunch easier to weld later on.

Here it is tacked up and ready to finish weld.

And finally, after it's tig welded. Ready to go!
