Lincoln Progress

I've been working on the brakes in the Lincoln. I'm doing what I call a sympathetic restoration on the car. I'm not taking it down to every nut and bolt and starting over, I'm cleaning up what's there are making it wok right. This car will be a driver first and foremost.

So that's what I did on the brakes, a lot of cleaning and rebuilding. These are self energizing brakes of a modern-ish design so they should stop the car well given the stock 100 horsepower it will make. Here's how it went.

With the front drums removed, here's what we got.

On the backside we find furry, with distinct greasy undertones.

I took it apart this far and cleaned all the moving parts. Now I can see what is actually broken or needs replacement.

Here's the same brake cleaned up with a rebuilt wheel cylinder and all new everything else.

The backside is cleaned up nicely.

The rear drums are attached on tapered key way type axles. This is a horrible design that not only breaks easily but also is a bitch to remove. Here's how you do it, with an ancient old special drum puller that you beat on with a sledge. But don't forget to heat the crap out of it with a torch!

This is the tapered axle and the key in place, when the key breaks the drum (along with the wheel) goes rolling down the road. Genius!

More cleaning and new parts, we are done here!
